Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights

20160127:
It's been a long time since I first looked at this song and I've learned many things since that time.

Looking at the tab below, I'd start by just practicing the following chord progression: C, C, G, G, F, F, C, G. It is sufficient to strum and sing along with these chords.

Then a simple finger-picking patter can spruce it up and a provides a good opportunity to practice timing the vocals.

Finally, before playing the song as tabbed below, I'd start with the following simplification:

C
e|-------0---------|------[-]--------|
B|-1-------------1-|-------1-------1-|
G|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|
D|-----2-------2---|-----2-------2---|
A|-3-------3-------|-3-------3-------|
E|-----------------|-----------------|
_| 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

G
e|-------3---------|------[-]--------|
B|-0-------------0-|-------0-------0-|
G|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|
D|-----0-------0---|-----0-------0---|
A|-----------------|-----------------|
E|-3-------3-------|-3-------3-------|
_| 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

F
e|-----------------|-----------------|
B|-------0---------|------[-]--------|
G|-0-------------0-|-------0-------0-|
D|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|
A|-----3-------3---|-----3-------3---|
E|-1-------1-------|-1-------1-------|
_| 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

C G
e|-------0---------|-------3---------|
B|-1-------------1-|-0-------------0-|
G|---0-------0-----|---0-------0-----|
D|-----2-------2---|-----0-------0---|
A|-3-------3-------|-----------------|
E|-----------------|-3-------3-------|
_| 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

where [-] indicates an alternative choice of note.

Today J.B. was playing this song and it seemed like something I could learn. It's definitely easy to strum, but it would take a while to get the fingerpicking down. One of the other tabs suggested playing the chords while singing to get the right feel for when to change chords. That definitely helped. Most tabs call "?" an F chord. One tab called it an F6. Technically the notes are F C D G B. It would definitely be an F by considering the bass notes.

Capo on VI.
The chord pattern is C C G G ? ? C G.
Where ? = [1 3 0 0 0 X]

*Alterations, see below.

The rest of the song is just small variations on the intro. I'm not going to write out all the variations, I'll just mention them here and you can throw them in as you like. The letters in parentheses are found above the tab and show the area(s) that are being varied.

++ In the first few repetitions the hammer base is removed (A,B).
++ It never again goes up to G (3rd fret e-string) in the fourth measure (C), it stays at B (open B-string).
++ Sometimes the higher note is moved around within the fingerpicking structure (D).
++ They sometimes walk the bass up in the second half of the fourth measure (E): A|-2-3-|
++ Bass is also walked up occasionally at the end of the eighth measure (F): A|-0-2-|

Make of the above what you will, you can just play the intro the whole time through and it will sound fine, or you can randomly add the stuff I mentioned to suit your own style.

Lastly there is the final, guitar solo, tabbed w/o a capo. Play the intro under it, and finish on a C chord.
