Parokya ni Edgar - Harana

20160630:
Learning to play this song was interesting because I was practicing a lot and yet I was unable to play it by myself without the original song playing in the background. Eventually, however, it all just clicked. I started playing at a continuous rhythm and I sang at the proper pace. There were still a couple of hiccups along the way, but I was amazed at how smooth I managed to both play and sing the song. There were also some realizations made when it came to simplifying the guitar part, because I couldn't handle the complicated strumming while also singing. Another part was knowing the chord progression and not forcing it to go over specific words. Said differently, I succeeded when playing and singing to a lyrics-only page (as opposed to a lyrics-and-chords page).

Unfortunately, since it's not in English, it'll be a long time before I can memorize the lyrics on my own. In fact, I can hardly remember lyrics for songs which are in English (unless they're my own, and even then).

ALL CAPS designate a phonetic change to help facilitate my learning.

I was looking at the draft for this post recently and started practicing it again. I focused on practicing the chord progression for the verse and memorizing it. At first I played most chords with open chords (e.g., open G, open C, open Am, and open D). However I later tried barring most chords and that somehow aided in memorization. I also thought it sounded better.

In any case I thought of it as (barred) G, down, left, left. Down from E to Am. Return to Bm, return to Am. And then D.

Remark: I got the impression that the process I went through recently was analogous to riding a bike. That is, once you've learned to ride a bike (and acquired a sufficient amount of practice), then getting back on after many years just requires jogging your memory - more or less.
